FREE ARTISTS WORKSHOPS

The Association of Performing Arts Presenters is pleased to announce a workshop series designed especially to help performing artists thrive in this new decade of challenges and opportunities.   The workshops set the stage for the annual APAP Conference that brings together artists, agents/managers, presenters,producers, and others for the largest marketplace, showcase, and professional development convening in the performing arts presenting field.  Sessions are structured to help artists achieve success on both creative and business sides through peer-learning and networking with seasoned professionals. No registration fee is required for artists to take advantage of this special opportunity. The Free Artists Workshop sessions take place at the New York Hilton on Thursday, January 7, 2010 from 9:00am – 4:00pm, as described below.

The ABC’s of Touring: It’s a Business – Sue Endrizzi, Director, California Arts Management (9:00am -12:00pm)

You are a performer and want the world to see and hear your talent, but what does it take to go on the road and come home with some money? Whether you are self-represented or working with an agent or manager, every performing artist needs to learn the basics of producing and managing a tour. In this session you will learn what to look for in a booking manager; how to set fees, tour budgets, and create successful marketing materials’ and how to get the most “bang for your buck” out of a booking conference.  This session is for artists with beginning to intermediate levels of experience who may be new to touring or otherwise want new ideas and strategies for success in today’s marketplace.

Nurturing Your Art: The Critical Response Process – John Borstel, Humanities Director, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange (1:00pm – 2:00pm)

John Borstel, co-author with Liz Lerman, Founding Artistic Director of the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, of the highly effective Critical Response Process will demonstrate this widely-recognized method that nurtures the development of artistic works-in-progress through a four-step, facilitated dialogue between artists,peers, and audiences. 

Shifting Ground: Artists, Managers, Presenters and Producers – Beth Morrison, Producer, Beth Morrison Projects; Diane Rodriguez, Associate Producer and Director of New Play Productions,  Center Theater Group;  Kim Whitener, Producing Director, HERE Arts Center (2:15pm – 4:00pm)

Much has shifted in the ways artists, managers, presenters and producers work together to bring the arts to diverse audiences and settings across the country.  This session will focus on strategies for addressing a range of factors that affect the role and relationship of key players in the process of developing and presenting work. 

Technology and New Media: Make It Work for You – Steve Lambert and Eve Mosher, Internet Consultants, Creative Capital  (2:15pm – 4:00pm)

Participants will develop a step-by-step holistic strategy for using a range of internet applications to achieve specific career goals.Additionally, the workshop will help artists expand their thinking to quickly recognize and implement the possibilities of new technologies as they develop.
