September 2009
"The Cultural Exchange Fund has allowed me to meet artists and see projects I never would have had the opportunity to connect with. It has allowed me meaningful time within a community to understand their issues, and how the artists meet those needs and how they might interface with those of my own community. It also provided my with the luxury to be able to view a project multiple times, so that I could be certain that it was an appropriate selection for our series. Finally by allowing me the opportunity to attend a festival, it enriched my knowledge of the field and gave me first-hand experience of the work of not just one, but three dozen artists, some I will program right away, and others I am now aware of for opportunities that may arise in future series." – Jordan Peimer, Director Public Programs, Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA (Traveled to Scotland for the Edinburgh Festival in August 2009)

Throughout the month of August, Arts Presenters met with new arts leaders in the Obama administration to discuss the issues important to our members and the field. Sandra Gibson, President and CEO, Arts Presenters and Leah Frelinghuysen, Public Affairs Director, Arts Presenters met with Kalpen Modi, Associate Director in the Office of Public Engagement at the White House where he outlined the President's priorities broadly impacting the performing arts field. Expanding public-private partnerships and funding opportunities, improving access to arts education and cultural programs, creating a competitive workforce that meets the needs of the current global economy and strengthening opportunities for cultural diplomacy are some of the priorities that have been articulated by this administration. Arts Presenters was also invited to meet with Rocco Landesman, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, along with other arts and humanities organizations to hear his vision and priorities for the agency. We are encouraged by the support expressed by the Chairman to strengthen and expand accessibility to arts education across the country. We look forward to working with all of the new political appointees working with the arts community on advancing the performing arts field in the areas of arts education, appropriations, national service, cultural diplomacy, and other relevant issues critical to our field.
