Under the Radar - Festival and Symposium

January 7-18, 2009 – Before, During and After the APAP Conference!

Now in its fifth season, the Under the Radar Festival has presented 52 theatrical productions from more than 14 countries and around the United States. Spotlighting artists ranging from emerging talents to masters in the field, the festival is an adventurous, wild – and wildly entertaining – mix of works by ensembles, solo artists, writers, and creators. Under the Radar (UTR) offers a crash course in theatre that is exciting, independent and experimental, created by some of the most dynamic artists working today. UTR is anchored at the Public Theatre, with performances at various nearby venues.

The Under the Radar Festival features full productions by independent theatre artists – all presented in New York City during the APAP Conference, two days before the Conference and 10 days after the Conference. In addition to performances, Under the Radar also features a day-long, invitation-only symposium during the Conference to assist presenters, theatre directors, producers and ensemble theatre companies in building the face-to-face relationships that are essential to these fields. An innovative "speed-dating" program – where presenters can rapidly meet Under the Radar artists and companies – also takes place during the Conference. (Friday, January 9, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm)

The annual festival is curated by Mark Russell, an independent producer working in New York City. Russell has also been guest artistic director for the Portland (Oregon) Institute of Contemporary Art's Time-Based Arts Festival (2006 and 2007) and, from 1983 to 2004, was the executive artistic director of Performance Space 122 (P.S. 122).

– Eric Bogosian

"No matter where Mark Russell is, he's always 10 minutes ahead of the curve, which is the right place to be. When he says to see something, I always go."
